Although both IELTS and PTE are used to assess the English language proficiency of non-native English speakers, however there are some difference between these two-testing systems. Let’s have a look at the differences between IELTS and PTEA.


Method of Exam

One of the key differences between IELTS and PTE is the method of exam. IELTS has a computer-delivered test as well as a paper-based test. On the other hand, PTE is only computer-based exam which is more technology oriented. Another key difference is the Speaking test. With IELTS, speaking test conducted by face-to-face interview with a real human. The PTE-A test requires you to speak in a microphone with other doing the same around you.



IELTS offer two versions of test, Academic Test and General Training Test. IELTS is accepted globally by more than 10,000 organisations including universities, professional bodies, employers, and Australian student visa and migration applications.

On the hand PTE offers only Academic Test. Although PTE is accepted globally by educational institutes however PTE has limited acceptance for migration process. For example, PTE accepted for migration in Australia although PTE is not accepted in Canada for migration.  


Exam Fee

Although the fee for both exams is same however PTE requires some extra for late booking.


Exam Time

The length of IELTS exam (2 hours and 50 minutes) is slightly shorter than that of PTE (3 hours and 11 minutes).


Result Time

Traditionally, paper based IELTS always released results 13 days after the test and computer based IELTS publish result within 2-5 calendar days. On the hand PTE publish result in 5 business days.
